The Lodge, Lark Lane

As a huge fan of Negresco on Lark Lane, I was more than disappointed to see that it had undergone a refurbishment, and was now named "The Lodge".  The exterior seemed to have none of it's former Gothic charm, but still, I thought I would give it a go.  Once inside, however, I realised that some of the artwork and furniture were the same as before, but some had changed for the better, giving a lighter and more welcoming atmosphere.

There are a range of world beers available, and a menu offering a variety of meals and snacks, with a good vegetarian selection.  Since it was a Sunday, I ordered a vegetarian roast dinner, and a chicken roast for my partner.   The food was wonderful, with a real home cooked feeling, as opposed to the frozen roast potatoes that are becoming more and more common when ordering pub food.  The staff were really friendly, and the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, with a nice mix of indie, rock and classic pop music playing.  Many people were dining with their families, and high chairs are available for babies.

The beer garden is a wonderful addition,  and is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the weather.  It has a  feeling of bringing the indoors outside, which really adds to the cool, laid back vibe.  As for value for money, I would say that it's a little more pricey than some other pubs offering Sunday lunch, at £20 for two roast dinners and two half glasses of beer, but I would still highly recommend visiting The Lodge - you will not be disappointed.

  1. As a regular of the Lodge I wanted to add a few thoughts of my own to your review, you missed out that the Lodge also has a fine selection of Drinks from around the world, including many Lagers and Real Ale. Being a real ale myself I was chuffed to bits when I found out that the lodge was stocking these, as its one of the few places on Lark lane that serves real ale, and also one of the few in the city that serves them in dimple mugs! The staff always pull a good pint and the beer is well kept and reasonably priced!

As for the lodge itself I remember it when it was the Masonic Pub and also the Negresco, over the last 10 years ive frequented both and I have to say its much nicer in its current incarnation, I found the Negresco to be too dark and dingy. It has a much nicer atmosphere now overall the place is lighter and somewhat livelier, it felt like it was a place you went to because it stayed open late, now it’s a place you want to go to because it has a great atmosphere and serves great drinks. Having a jukebox helps too! So if you ever find all the real ale has been drunk and the jukebox is playing 80s tunes its probably mine and my friends fault!

  2. I agree with you on all accounts! I love that a whole array of real ales are available (I did mention this, but didn't go into detail!) and I feel like that is a good indicator of The Lodge's high quality service. I'm glad someone else appreciates good music and beer in such lovely surroundings as I do!
